I remember when I was in school and I would get these cerebral assignments from James Chiang that went like this:
PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE METAPHYSICAL DIMENSION
Please photograph your subject without looking through the camera.
Try to avoid looking at the subject even, except to give yourself some focal plane registration and awareness of the periphery.
Beyond that please utilize your mind to step out of the position of being the photographer in the present, and into the role of the viewer of the images you're making, reflecting backwards.
This should form a symbiont circle of pre-visualizing how your images are going to appear by using your mind only.
Needless to say I bought a thesaurus and grabbed my camera and made this.
Oh, and I called this guy to use his sounds.
